Trossachs Holiday Park, by Aberfoyle, Stirlingshire, Scotland. FK8 3SA

Where nature takes your breath away

When you come to the Trossachs Holiday Park in Scotland’s wild and beautiful heartland, there’s no need to bring an alarm clock; your morning wake up call will be far more natural, and come from the park’s resident woodpecker as he looks for breakfast.

But in this unspoilt and secluded spot on the edge of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, these grub hunting birds are the nearest thing you’ll get to a noisy neighbour.

This is a place of peaceful but dramatic wild glens, sparkling lochs and awe-inspiring views.

If you look west from the wide deck of the Wessex lodges, the majestic Ben Lomond mountain range shapes the horizon.

Turn your head left, to the east, and you’re facing the Campsie Fells (meaning crooked fairy hill), made from volcanic rocks that cooled millions of years ago.

And straight ahead, to the south – over the little lochan, the small lake that some of the holiday lodges surround - and you’re looking over a patchwork of wildflowers and deep green that make up Flanders Moss, an ancient waterlands bursting with wildlife.

The only downside of having a holiday home at the Trossachs is you’re constantly fighting the urge to grab your camera and take yet another stunning shot.

All yours, all year

Lodge owners can come to the park at any time of the year. And to get full use, different generations of one family often buy a lodge between them… when the grandparents aren’t escaping for a bit of solitude, their son or daughter and their children are setting off on an adventure.

In May, the ancient oak woodland beside the park is a mass of intense purple as bluebells carpet the floor. And Christmas can have a real traditional feel, with crisp, bright mornings and sometimes snow under foot – and occasionally up to the window sills!

All the year round, deer sneak through the woodland, and at times (normally later in months), stags with great antlers can sometimes be heard and spotted. And if you keep your eyes peeled, you may be lucky and catch sight of a pine marten, the wild weasel like creatures that are rare in England and Wales but regularly seen in Scotland. Holiday home owners at the Trossachs typically spend their time walking (often with their dogs), cycling, fishing, taking photos, painting, drawing or playing golf. The park has made a special deal with the local golf club which means lodge owners can play all year round for just £100.  Yes, you got that right, just £100 a year.

But don’t be entirely fooled, the Trossachs Holiday Park has a distinct feeling of being in the middle of nowhere but actually it’s not far from everywhere in central Scotland. Civilisation is only a few minutes’ drive away, and so are restaurants, shops, airports and railway stations.

Things you also might like to know:  Glasgow is only 45 minutes away. It has two airports. And Easyjet advertises flights from London and Bristol for less than £20. Some people who already have a holiday home at the Trossachs leave a small car at the lodge and fly in from England for weekend breaks away. Others escape from Edinburgh and Glasgow and other parts of Scotland and the borders. Stirling is less than half an hour away.  The park is eco-friendly and has a David Bellamy award for its conservation and recycling work. There’s a small coffee shop, a games lounge and play area for children at the park.  Mobile phone coverage is good, especially for 02 and Vodaphone, and lodge owners have free wifi.
